Occupational Therapy Program

Our comprehensive occupational therapy program at Koala ABA & Learning Centers is designed to meet the unique needs of each child. By focusing on gross motor skills development, fine motor skills activities, and handwriting improvement, we create a supportive environment for children to thrive. Our experienced team works closely with parents and caregivers to ensure that every child receives personalized attention and achieves their full potential.

Comprehensive Evaluation Process

Our experienced occupational therapy team begins the therapy journey by conducting thorough evaluations. These assessments identify any obstacles that may hinder the individual from engaging in typical day-to-day activities.

Our experienced occupational therapy team begins the therapy journey by conducting thorough evaluations. These assessments identify any obstacles that may
hinder the individual from
engaging in typical day-to-day
activities.

We evaluate various crucial areas, including:

  • How the child learns
  • How the child plays
  • How the child cares for themselves
  • How the child interacts with their environment

Personalized Goals and Strategies

Based on the evaluation results, our KOALAFIEDTM occupational therapists create personalized goals and strategies to target key skills. Common examples include:

  • Achieving independence in dressing, eating, and grooming
  • Using the bathroom
  • Developing fine motor skills such as writing, coloring, and cutting with scissors

Individualized Therapy Sessions

At Koala ABA & Learning Centers, our OT sessions typically last for half an hour to one hour, and the frequency of sessions per week is determined based on the individual’s specific needs. Here are some samples of individualized sessions:

  • Tear paper into strips
  • Put a puzzle together
  • Use tweezers to pick up small objects
  • Use a spoon, fork, and knife for specialized feeding support

Sensory Processing Disorder

A sensory diet implemented by our OTs provides just-right inputs to help kids achieve optimal states of arousal. Deep pressure therapies, joint compressions, and heavy work activities may be included. Through play, we address hypersensitivity to sounds, touch, smells, and more.

For avoidance behaviors due to sensory defensiveness, desensitization is gradual and game-based. Progressive activities build tolerance via adaptive strategies. Calming exercises counteract erratic movements and emotional outbursts from overload.

Focus Areas

Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Our licensed and experienced occupational therapists develop individualized plans for children with varying needs. Through fun and engaging activities, they address fine motor abilities like handwriting, cutting with scissors, and other skills. Sensory and motor activities also target gross motor milestones like balance, coordination, and grade-level physical activities.

Whether in a clinical setting or at home, parents are integrally involved to best generalize therapeutic gains across environments. Through adaptive tools, modifications, and caregiver education, we empower children’s participation at school and community activities.

Gross Motor Skills Development

We recognize the importance of gross motor skills in overall development. Our therapy sessions may include activities designed to improve:

  • Coordination and balance
  • Strength and endurance
  • Running, jumping, and climbing

By focusing on gross motor skills, we help children build a strong foundation for future physical activities and daily living tasks.

Fine Motor Skills Activities

Developing fine motor skills is crucial for various daily activities and academic success. Our occupational therapy sessions may include:

  • Tracing and letter formation exercises
  • Strengthening hand muscles
  • Using specialized tools like pencil grips or adaptive writing utensils

These activities help children improve their dexterity and control, leading to better handwriting skills and overall fine motor proficiency.

Handwriting Skills

Improving handwriting skills is a significant aspect of our occupational therapy program. We employ various techniques to help children develop:

  • Proper grip and posture
  • Improved hand-eye coordination
  • Enhanced visual-motor integration

By addressing handwriting challenges, we aim to boost confidence and academic performance in children who struggle with this skill.
